Sotomayor vows impartiality if confirmed to court
WASHINGTON – Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court nominee in history, vowed loyalty to “the impartiality of our justice system” Monday, confronting Republican skeptics at Senate hearings suffused with racial politics but all but certain to lead to her confirmation.
“My personal and professional experiences help me to listen and understand, with the law always commanding the result in every case,” the 55-year old Sotomayor said in her first substantive remarks in public since President Barack Obama nominated her seven weeks ago.
Her comments amounted to a polite but firm rebuttal to Republicans who have criticized her 2001 comment that a “wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences” might make better rulings than a white male.
No one argues the fact that the United States Senate is a white male club. Yeah, there are women, an occasional black, maybe a Hispanic or Asian-American, but you’ll never have a hard time putting together an all-white foursome at Congressional Country Club.
This bunch, who historically and dismissively abrogated treaties with the native-Americans they virtually erased from the country, are touchy about the white man’s wisdom. These paragons of whiteness, engineered the ‘southern strategy‘ with the specific intent of ethnically cleansing blacks from their right to the ballot. The white men of the United States Senate wouldn’t even share the vote with white American women until 1920. But they sneeringly claim to wisdom beyond (among nearly all else) Latina women.
These preening last-of-the-dinosaur God-figures, had the temerity to glance over their spectacles at a woman whose intellectual luggage they couldn’t even lift and suggest her remark about wise Latina women was racist.
It’s a discouraging sight to watch one’s peers shit their pants in public and I am a white male, so I guess these idiots (at least in that sense) are my peers. But the time and the patience for such nonsense is fast disappearing and, once gone, we will be a better nation.
